Learning Never Gets Old

Last year, Menorah Manor introduced a brand new program for our residents called Menorah Manor YOUniversity. Dubbed as offering “higher education with YOU in mind,” the goal of YOUniversity is to fulfill the Jewish mitzvah of lifelong learning by bringing scholars from throughout the Bay Area to teach college- level subjects in “bite-sized pieces” to our residents.

Last year’s program was a rousing success and we are thrilled that our second academic year is already off to a great start! The classes take place once a month from March through November culminating in a wonderful celebration in December, during which we congratulate our graduates.

Last year’s Menorah Manor YOUniversity class provided feedback on their experience and “demanded” that we run the program again this year. When asked why they wanted to participate, they commented that they have ongoing interests in new topics and would love to continue their education.

Research can help reduce cognitive decline as well as help older adults deal with depression. We have found that our students engage in discussions long after the presentation has taken place and greatly look forward to what is next on the syllabus. In advance of each lecture, the enrolled students receive an article to read along with a biography of the lecturer and other pertinent information. So far this year, students have already attended lectures on meteorology, acting, and storytelling.

This year’s program promises to be another exceptional experience for Menorah Manor YOUniversity students!

Menorah Manor YOUniversity is made possible by a grant from the Jewish Federation of Pinellas and Pasco Counties.
